The project involved the demolition of existing redundant buildings, refurbishment of the heritage church, which was damaged by fire in 1996, and construction of a new cathedral as an extension to the heritage church.

Heritage work involved the reinstatement of existing and new sandstone work, faithfully reproducing existing carvings; construction of a new copper clad spire; new slate roof; and copper cappings gutters and downpiping all to original detail. Refurbishment of the interior included a new roof structure and ceilings, re-establishment of the original plaster columns and arch mouldings and granite paving on the new and existing concrete slabs.

The new cathedral houses a congregation of 800 people seated around a central altar and is airconditioned. The steel framed structure features north and south walls constructed of polished, pre-caste architectural concrete and the east and west walls clad in copper.

The interior is lined with timber veneered panels. Granite paving and timber will be used on the floor. The scope of works also included the installation of specially commissioned artworks in the Cathedral and Chapel and construction of a new Cloister and new Parish Hall.
